Andrew Wood Presents: The Music of George Gershwin

Summertime, It Ain't Necessarily So, A Foggy Day, They Can't Take That Away From Me, I Got Rhythm... the list goes on and on! Ever since starting to listen to and play jazz music this name 'Gershwin' always popped up on album liner notes and at the top of sheet music. After delving a little deeper and getting to know more of this great music, I decided last year to create a whole program of music celebrating this great Broadway composer who has made such a huge impression on the worlds of jazz, classical, musicals and songwriting.

Instead of a straightforward 'heritage' style show, I wanted to do something different and explore this music, see what we as a trio could find within the songs. Without a front-line melody instrument or a vocalist, the arrangements which this rhythm section has developed are involving and creative, showcasing the great performance, improvisation and arranging skills that the trio has to offer. We're also going to be presenting some of our original material specially composed for this project which features compositions from all of the band, encompassing a wide range of jazz infused styles.

On double bass it's an absolute pleasure to be working again with Dominic Holmes, who I have shared a dingy flat with at music college and have been performing with for 12 years in ensembles ranging from jazz trios to orchestras. At the Peggy's baby grand piano, Matthew Racliffe will be in the chair - Matt is an absolute force of a musician who I have thoroughly enjoyed working with as part of the Ben Martin Quartet and our trio since 2012. It's been great to see these two long term collaborators of mine come together for the first time during this project, if you're still reading please do come and check out the gig!

‘Jazzpac Lincolnshire have had the pleasure of seeing this Trio develop into becoming one of the very best in the East Midlands. Sensitive, thoughtful and swinging interpretations of some great songs.’ - John Holland, Lincolnshire Jazzpac
